I grew up performing in a family bluegrass band, opening for country music stars at state fairs, high school auditoriums, and music festivals. We moved around a lot, but books always went with us, and wherever we ended up, Mom made sure we were regulars at the local library.

 

I majored in theater and applied my classical training doing voiceovers on thousands of radio/TV commercials and a shady soft-core 900-number phone tree. In 1983, I married Gary Rodgers, and before we had kids, we worked as fire lookouts in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest. With all that space and silence, I inhaled books like a woodchipper and explored my dabbling love of writing. (Here's the tower in the National Historic Lookout Register.)

 

For Mother's Day 1992, Gary gave me my first computer with a card that said, "This is to show I know your brain hasn't turned to Wheatina." ​I started working on my first book between temp jobs, theater gigs, and motherhood. 

 

When our kids were 5 and 7, I was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, an aggressive blood cancer.

That sucked.

 

Books were my life raft during two brutal years of treatment and recovery. I used the chemo downtime to write my first two novels: Crazy for Trying (MacMurray & Beck/MacAdam-Cage 1996) and Sugarland (Spinsters Ink/Bertelsmann 1999). My third book, Bald in the Land of Big Hair (HarperCollins 2001), a memoir about my cancer experience, was embraced by bookclubs and became an international bestseller.  (Spoiler Alert: I lived!)

The success of BLBH sparked magazine work, a syndicated newspaper column, and invitations to coauthor high profile book projects. From 2003 to 2026, as a ghostwriter specializing in fiction and celebrity memoirs, I wrote 30+ books with TV/movie stars, style icons, activists, and other extraordinary people. Only an elite handful of collaborators industry-wide have achieved EGOT status; I've been thrilled and grateful to work with five Emmy winners, two Grammy winners, three Oscar winners, and two Tony winners. ​

 

My books and collabs have earned thousands of 5-star reviews and other accolades, including:

• multiple NYT bestsellers (including a #1 NYT bestseller)

• multiple USA Today bestsellers

• multiple WSJ bestsellers

• multiple Kirkus starred reviews

• multiple Publishers Weekly starred reviews

and one of the screenplays I contributed to was nominated for an Oscar.

Confidentiality is sacred, so a lot of my work isn't credited in media or listed here, and yes, I'm cool with that. I've had my name on my own bestsellers, and honestly, the thrill was gone as soon as they told me I'd have to wear a bra on the Today Show. For me, it's always about the books, whether I'm the messenger of the moment or the one who carries water for the messenger whose moment is at hand. Collaborative alchemy takes me back to my creative roots in theater and music. I love this work and the bounty it's provided for me and my family.

 

Gary and I are grandparents now, happily growing old together at our home on the beach in the Pacific Northwest. Life is beautiful, and I am profoundly grateful.
